High resolution ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency soundwaves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. A handheld probe that produces soundwaves penetrates the structures of the body and creates images which a doctor uses to visualise the internal organs, vessels and soft tissues of the body.

Ultrasound images are captured in real-time and can show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.

High resolution ultrasound is used to perform detailed examinations of the head and neck, thyroid gland, testes, prostate gland, breast and female pelvic organs.

It is also used to examine the tendons, muscles and soft tissues of the major joints, and in procedures to guide the administration of steroid injections into joints and surrounding soft tissues. In addition, it is used to provide guidance for biopsy, aspiration and drainage procedures.
