Sunway Medical Centre Embarks on a Mission to Better Vision

16 October 2022

SUNWAY CITY, 16 October 2022 – While we may sometimes take the little things for granted like assuming that slight discomfort in the eye is something that will come and go, in fact, those tiny pair of monogram balls are the windows to the world – telling our wide range of emotions to the condition of our health.

In conjunction with World Sight Day recently, Sunway Medical Centre organised the World Sight Day Symposium 2022 to highlight the importance of paying attention to your eyes. With the theme, Envision For A Better Future, eye specialists from Sunway Eye Centre addressed various conditions including retinal detachment, myopia, red eye, optic neuritis, aged-related macular degeneration (AMD) and paediatric eye conditions.

“Globally, at least 1 billion people have near or distance vision impairment that could be prevented or has yet to be addressed. This symposium has successfully brought attention to the importance of caring for your eyes. As the largest private quaternary hospital in Malaysia, we are dedicated to provide better diagnosis and treatment for various eye conditions that will improve our patients’ quality of life,” said Dr Seow Vei Ken, Chief Executive Officer at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City.

The World Sight Day Symposium 2022 had more than 350 participants, comprising mainly healthcare professionals and general practitioners.

The symposium addressed six common eye conditions and the advancements in diagnosis and treatment in separate panel discussions. The conditions are retinal detachment, myopia, red eye, optic neuritis, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

In the first session, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon, Dr Peh Khaik Kee highlighted that retinal detachment is a medical emergency that requires an eye doctor or emergency treatment. Blurry vision was discussed in the next session where Consultant Ophthalmologist and Refractive Surgeon, Dr Malisa Ami shared the primary causes and symptoms and how blurry vision can lead to more serious problems if not treated properly.

Consultant Ophthalmologist (Corneal and External Eye Diseases) & Refractive Surgeon, Dr Umi Kalthum Mohd Noh shared that red eye is common and that conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eye. Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist, Dr Lakana Kumar Thavaratnam emphasised that early detection of optic neuritis is important as treatment may improve the speed of recovery.

Consultant Ophthalmologist (Medical Retina), Dr Tara Mary George shared that studies have demonstrated the efficacy of different antiVEGF medications, and optimal dosing regimen and delivery mechanism has increased overall vision and minimise the burden on patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist, Dr Fiona Chew Lee Min stated that early recognition, diagnosis and treatment are essential to optimise children’s eye health to prevent vision loss as it is estimated that one in five preschool children have vision problems and disorders that go on to affect their adulthood.

The symposium ended on a high note with key learnings and takeaways from a panel discussion moderated by Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Chin Pik Kee. As the largest private quaternary hospital in Malaysia, Sunway Medical Centre strives to encourage discussion on the latest clinical practices and adopts the best practices throughout the hospital.
