Meet Our DAISY Honouree June 2026

Every DAISY Award tells a story of a nurse who has touched the lives of others, often going beyond clinical duties. For our June 2026 DAISY Award Honouree, Gowri A/P Tamil Selvan, a Senior Staff Nurse from Ward 6A, this recognition reflects the thoughtful care, compassion and attentiveness she brings to her patients every day.
The Moment of Recognition
Gowri has been serving at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City since 2014. Soft-spoken by nature, her experience in nursing has really shaped her into the person she is today — a nurse known for her big heart, attentiveness and dedication. We spoke with her to learn more about her nursing journey, and what receiving the DAISY Award means to her.
“I was very surprised and speechless when they announced my name!” Gowri exclaims. “I didn’t expect to win. I felt so happy, honoured, and grateful to my patients, my team, and my leaders for believing in me. I am honoured to receive this recognition because I realised that this career is made for me as I genuinely enjoy caring for people and being able to make a difference in their lives.”
From a Father’s Wish to Her Passion for Nursing
Not many people know that nursing was not Gowri’s first career choice. In fact, it was her father who encouraged her to pursue nursing.
“Nursing was actually my father’s wish for me. At the beginning, he was the one who encouraged and guided me towards this career path. But day by day, as I learned more and started caring for patients, nursing slowly became my own interest and passion.”
Today, Gowri treats every patient with the same kindness and dignity, believing that nursing goes beyond clinical skills. “I want to treat all my patients the same. Beyond clinical routine and skills, I also want to care for their emotional wellbeing,” she explains.
Seeing her patients recover brings her joy and reminds her why nursing is more than just fulfilling her father’s wish, it has become a career she genuinely loves.
Small Acts of Care, Lasting Memories
Gowri believes the smallest acts of care can leave the biggest impression on a person. The patient who nominated her described her as an attentive nurse who never made him feel like a burden when he needed help during his hospital stay. As he had difficulty moving around and reaching for things beside his hospital bed, Gowri took the time to make sure he was comfortable, warm and had enough water within reach.
Her approach to patient care is also reflected in a memorable experience in the hospital. “There was one experience that really touched me. One day, a man came and thanked me for the care I had given his mother. He also said, ‘My mother is much better now. If she ever meets you at the temple, she will be very happy.’ The surprising part was that I could not remember which patient he was referring to!” Gowri laughs.
“As nurses, we care for so many patients throughout our careers, and although we may not remember everyone, they still remember us for the way we cared for them.” Moments like these remind Gowri that care and compassion can stay with patients and their families even after they leave the hospital.
Staying Strong Through the Demands of Nursing
Working in a healthcare setting takes resilience. For Gowri, staying calm and working closely with her team helps her navigate the demands of the job while keeping patient safety her priority.
“Nursing can be physically and emotionally challenging. Sometimes we need to manage many patients and situations at the same time. I stay calm, work closely with my team, and always put patient safety first.”
She credits her family for being her biggest source of support and motivation. “My family always encourages me to do my best. At work, I want to treat every patient like my own family. Seeing them recover, smile, or feel comforted reminds me why I chose nursing and motivates me every day. It is also especially meaningful when patients and their families send kind wishes to me and my family. These moments touch my heart and remind me that kindness and compassionate care can make a real difference.”
A Message to Every Nurse
Gowri wishes to remind every nurse that their efforts matter, even when they seem like part of their everyday routine. “I would like to tell the nurses out there that even the smallest thing we do can make a difference to a patient. Sometimes we may feel that we are just doing our daily duties, but to a patient or their family, our kindness, patience and care can mean so much. We may not always see the impact immediately, but the care we give can stay in someone’s heart for a very long time. So, never underestimate the difference you make as a nurse.”
