Nursyafrina Binti M.Syafri, Staff Nurse from Ward 3D

The DAISY Award continues to shine a spotlight on nurses who go above and beyond for their patients. At Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City, we are honoured to recognise yet another extraordinary and inspiring nurse in delivering exceptional care to our patients.

We are proud to celebrate our May 2026 DAISY Honouree, Nursyafrina Binti M.Syafri, Staff Nurse from Ward 3D (the Haematology Ward), whose compassion and dedication have made a meaningful difference in the lives of her patients.

The Moment of Recognition

Known affectionately as Rina by her colleagues, Nursyafrina has been serving in Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City, for the past six and a half years. We sat down with her to learn more about her nursing journey, what inspires her every day, and what receiving the DAISY Award really means to her.

“When I heard my name being announced, I was completely surprised. It took a few moments for it to sink in that my name had been called. I felt deeply honoured and incredibly grateful,” Rina recalls.

The moment became more meaningful as the DAISY Award committee read the heartfelt nomination submitted by one of her patients. The patient described Rina as someone who showed genuine care, knowledge, warmth, and empathy, someone who felt more like a friend than a nurse.

Compassion at the Heart of Nursing

For Rina, helping people has always come naturally to her. Nursing is more than just a career to her, it is a calling. Besides, she has always been drawn to the combination of science, compassion, and human connection.

“I wanted a career where I could make a meaningful difference in people's lives, and that’s why I chose nursing.”

Working in the haemotology ward has strengthened her belief that every patient deserves to be treated with kindness, dignity, and empathy.

“If my own family members were lying in the hospital bed, I would want them to receive the same compassion, dignity and respect. That’s why I always remind myself to treat others the way I would want my own family to be treated,” she explains.

“Over the past six and a half years, I have treated many patients. My hope is that they remember they were treated with kindness, dignity, and genuine compassion. Beyond medical care, I hope they felt heard, respected, and supported throughout their journey. If they leave knowing that someone truly cared about them as a person, then I know I have done my job well.”

Moments That Matter Most

Rina understands the emotional journey many of her patients go through.

“One experience that will always stay with me involved caring for a patient who was undergoing a long and challenging treatment journey. Throughout their stay, I tried to offer not only clinical care but also encouragement and reassurance. Before leaving the hospital, the patient thanked me for making them feel seen, heard, and cared for. That moment reinforced why I became a nurse, because it showed me that sometimes the greatest impact comes from simply being present for another person.”

She is always reminded that sometimes the greatest impact is just simply being present for her patients.

“What I love most is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone's life every single day. Whether it's providing comfort during a difficult treatment, celebrating a patient's recovery, or simply listening when they need someone to talk to, every interaction matters.

The Emotional Side of Nursing

Nurses are often the ones offering comfort and strength to patients and their families during some of the most difficult moments in their lives. While their care is centred on others, the emotional demands of the profession often go unseen. One of Rina’s biggest challenges is balancing the emotional demands of caring for patients and their families, especially during difficult times. Nursing requires clinical expertise, but it also requires emotional resilience.

“I overcome these challenges by leaning on my colleagues for support and reflecting on each experience. Even when I cannot change a patient's circumstances, I can always offer kindness, dignity, and compassion.”

She is also grateful to have a supportive multidisciplinary team. “Knowing that my colleagues share the same commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care gives me the strength to continue making each patient's journey a little easier,” she says.

What Keeps Her Going

Rina credits her patients as her greatest source of motivation.

“Working in the haematology ward has taught me to see life from a different perspective. My patients’ strength, resilience, and determination inspire me to give my best.”

Although no two days are ever the same, she strives to show up with the same compassion and dedication every day.

“Even on challenging days, knowing that a simple act of kindness or a few reassuring words can make someone’s day reaffirms why I chose this profession.”

A Message to Every Nurse

Rina hopes every nurse remembers that their efforts matter, even when they are not immediately recognised.

"Patients may not remember every medication we gave, but they often remember how we made them feel. A kind word, listening without rushing, or simply being present can mean everything to someone going through a difficult time."

Her message is simple but powerful: "Never underestimate the impact of your compassion."

What the DAISY Award Means

Receiving the DAISY Award was never something Rina expected.

“I was genuinely surprised and deeply humbled. Nursing is a team effort, so I never expected to be recognised individually. Knowing that someone felt my care made enough of a difference to share their story is incredibly meaningful. It's an honour that I will always treasure, and it motivates me to continue giving my best to every patient I care for,” she says.

For Rina, the award is a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness and compassion can leave a lasting impact on someone's life.
