Behavioural Health Centre

The Behavioural Health Centre advocates a holistic approach to healthcare by nurturing the psychosocial aspects of physical illness. We believe that health is a state of body and mind wellness.

It is essential to nourish our thoughts, emotions and behaviours to produce better physical and mental health. We will help you to thrive and lead a healthier, fuller life.

Our team consists of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. We assist people in dealing with daily life challenges, emotional distress and mental health issues through:

  • Mental health screenings and psychological assessments (eg. intelligence, personality, dyslexia, autism, inattention, career)
  • Mind-body interventions for stress reduction and wellness (eg. relaxation, mindfulness, meditation)
  • Counselling and psychotherapies for children and adults (eg. play/art therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy)

Mental Health: 10 Key Facts
  1. Depression in Malaysia has doubled between 2019 and 2023. 4.6% of adults report depressive symptoms, with the highest prevalence in youth: 7.9 % (ages 16 – 19) and 7.6 % (ages 20 – 29) (NHMS 2023).
  2. About 1 in 6 Malaysian children (ages 5 – 15) struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety, sadness, behavioural problems (e.g., frequent anger, defiance), or difficulty focusing (NHMS 2023).
  3. About 27% of adolescents (13 – 17) are depressed, with rates in girls (~37 %) nearly double those in boys (~18 %) (NHMS 2022).
  4. Over 53% of working Malaysians report high work-related stress, with 1 in 5 showing symptoms of anxiety or depression (Relate Malaysia, 2021).
  5. 37.7% of Malaysian adults sleep less than 7 hours daily, which increases risks of stress, low mood, and health problems. Many report difficulty falling asleep, waking too often at night, or waking up too early (NHMS 2023).
  6. Suicide claims approximately 720,000 lives worldwide each year (≈1 every 40 seconds, WHO). In Malaysia, this translates to about 2 – 3 suicide deaths daily, making suicide a major public health concern.
  7. Mental health problems (e.g., stress, anxiety, depression) increase the risk of physical illnesses such as headaches, gastritis, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
  8. Recovery from physical illnesses (e.g., cancer, stroke) is strongly influenced by a person’s emotional state (e.g., feelings of hopelessness) and health behaviours (e.g., medication adherence, lifestyle changes).
  9. Alcohol and substance abuse are often linked with mental health problems, acting both as causes and consequences. They can increase the risk of depression, violence, accidents, and long-term health damage.
  10. Stigma and discrimination (e.g., being perceived as weak, dangerous, or untreatable) continue to prevent people from seeking help. However, effective treatments exist, including counselling, behavioural interventions, family education, medication, and psychosocial strategies.
