Robotic Arm-Assisted Joint Replacement Surgery

Don’t let joint pain keep you from doing the things you love - robotic arm-assisted joint replacement surgery can help you regain your former mobility in no time!

The best part about robotic technology is that it makes it possible for such surgeries to be highly personalised and customised to your condition, resulting in higher precision during the surgery.

Sunway Medical Centre offers the latest innovation in robotic arm-assisted joint replacement surgery with Mako SmartRobotics and ROSA Knee System.

Mako SmartRobotics

With Mako SmartRobotics technology, there is a reduced impact on bone and soft tissue during surgery, leading many hip and knee replacement patients to experience significant improvement in pain, stiffness, and function of the replaced joint.

Plan

Personalised surgical plan

The first step is patient-specific surgical planning. Before surgery, a CT scan of your knee or hip is taken to develop a 3D virtual model of your unique anatomy. Your doctor uses this model to evaluate your bone structure, disease severity, joint alignment and even the surrounding bone and tissue, so they can determine the optimal size, placement and alignment of your implant.

Assess

Range-of-motion assessment

Throughout your procedure, Mako provides real-time data to your surgeon. This allows them to continuously assess the movement and tension of your new joint and adjust your surgical plan if desired.

Prepare

Arthritic bone removal

In the operating room, your surgeon guides Mako’s robotic arm to remove the arthritic bone and cartilage from the knee or hip. A virtual boundary provides tactile resistance to help the surgeon stay within the boundaries defined in your surgical plan.

Insert

Implant placement

As the surgeon prepares to place the implant into its final position, the robotic-arm guides the implant at the desired angle defined in the surgical plan. This helps ensure the placement and alignment of the implant are performed according to plan.

Is Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery For Me?

It is for you if you have…

Severe hip or knee pain or stiffness resulting from non-inflammatory degenerative joint disease (including osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis, or avascular necrosis), rheumatoid arthritis or post-traumatic arthritis

Not experienced adequate relief with conservative treatment options, like bracing, medication or joint fluid supplements

Early to mid-stage osteoarthritis that doesn’t affect all 3 compartments of the knee

There Are 3 Types of Surgeries:

Mako Total Knee Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery

During total knee replacement (which is also called total knee arthroplasty), your surgeon removes the damaged surfaces of the knee joint and replaces them with metal and plastic components referred to as the prosthesis or implant. The implant is designed to replace the function of a healthy knee.

Mako Partial Knee Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery

If you caught the arthritic damage early, you may be eligible for a partial knee replacement. This is when the disease has not progressed to all 3 compartments of the knee, which means there are fewer parts that need to be replaced.

Mako Robotic-Arm Hip Replacement Surgery

During total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty), a surgeon removes the arthritic ball end of the femur (top of the thigh bone) and inserts a metal component (a stem) into the bone. The surgeon also replaces the hip socket with an acetabular cup lined with durable polyethylene plastic.

ROSA Knee System

ROSA, which is short for Robotic Surgical Assistant, is designed to help your surgeon to perform total knee replacements tailored to your unique knee anatomy, leading to enhanced comfort, less pain and a quick return to your daily activities within a short period of time.

This innovative technology utilises data collected before and during the surgery to let your surgeons know about details of your knee anatomy that could affect your implant fit, leading to more accurate cuts and implant placement during the surgery.

How It Works:

Before The Surgery

With ROSA Knee System, a 3D model of your knee anatomy will be created with a series of X-rays, which allows the surgeon to plan many specifics of your knee replacement before your surgery.

During The Surgery

Like an advanced GPS system, ROSA Knee System utilizes a camera and optical trackers attached to your leg to know exactly where your knee is in space. To ensure that your surgeon’s plan is carried out as intended, it will alter its position accordingly even if your leg moves a fraction of an inch.

Throughout the surgery, ROSA Knee will provide your surgeon with data on your knee, which combined with their skills, will help them know how to position your implant.
