Haematology

Haematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood.

What this test for?
Bone marrow biopsy and bone marrow aspiration are procedures to collect and examine bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside some of your larger bones. Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration can show whether your bone marrow is healthy and making normal amounts of blood cells. Doctors use these procedures to diagnose and monitor blood and marrow diseases, including some cancers, as well as fevers of unknown origins.

Specimen & Container: Marrow Aspirate Slides

Transportation Requirement: Not applicable

Test Schedule: Daily, 24hrs

Method: Reported by Consultant Haematologist

Turnaround Time: 2 working days

Laboratory Request Form: General Form

What this test for?
CD4 cells are white blood cells that play an important role in the immune system. CD4 cell count gives an indication of the status of immune system – body’s natural defence system against pathogens, infections and illnesses. CD4 cells are sometimes also called T-cells, T-lymphocytes, or helper cells.

Specimen & Container: Whole blood
EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

Test Schedule: Every Tuesday & Friday

Method: Flow cytometry using monoclonal antibody

Turnaround Time: 2 hours

Laboratory Request Form: General Form

What this test for?
CD8 cells, (T8 cells), are “suppressor” cells that complete the immune response. CD8+ cells can also be “killer” cells that kill cancer cells and other cells that are infected by a virus.

Specimen & Container: Whole blood
EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

Test Schedule: Every Tuesday & Friday

Method: Flow cytometry using monoclonal antibody

Turnaround Time: 2 hours

Laboratory Request Form: General Form

What this test for?
The CD4 cells count compared to the CD8 cell count, and the result is expressed as a ratio (CD4:CD8).

Specimen & Container: Whole blood
EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

Test Schedule: Every Tuesday & Friday

Method: Flow cytometry using monoclonal antibody

Turnaround Time: 2 hours

What this test for?
Reveal inflammatory activity in human body, not a stand-alone diagnostic tool, but help doctors diagnose or monitor the progress of an inflammatory disease.

Specimen & Container: Whole blood EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

Test Schedule: Daily, 24hrs

Method: Photometrical capillary stopped flow kinetic analysis

Turnaround Time: 1 hour

What this test for?
Is a common blood test to check a person’s general health or to screen for conditions such as anemia, where the red cells indices, white cells and platelets in the blood are assessed.

Specimen & Container: Whole blood EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

Test Schedule: Daily, 24hrs

Method: Optical Flow Cell and Impedance Transducer measurements follow the principles of a process called flow cytometry.

Turnaround Time: 1 hour

Laboratory Request Form: General Form

What this test for?
Used to check for anaemia, usually along with a haematocrit or as part of FBC. The test may be used to screen for, diagnose, or monitor a number of conditions and diseases that affect red blood cells (RBCs) and/or the amount of haemoglobinin blood.

Specimen & Container: Whole blood EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

Test Schedule: Daily, 24hrs

Method: Optical Flow Cell and Impedance Transducer measurements follow the principles of a process called flow cytometry.

Turnaround Time: 1 hour

Used to screen for Alpha Thalassemia and occasionally to detect Myeloproliferative syndromes and Erythroleukemia.

Specimen & Container: Whole blood EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

Test Schedule: Daily, 24hrs

Method: Brilliant cresyl blue staining technique and microscopy

What this test for?
Is a blood test used to look for abnormalities in blood cells. The three main blood cells that the test focuses on are: red cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body; white cells, which help your body fight infections and platelets, which are important for blood clotting The test provides information on the number and shape of these cells, which can help doctors diagnose certain blood disorders or other medical conditions.

Specimen & Container: Whole blood EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

Test Schedule: Daily, 24hrs

Method: Reported by Haematologist

Turnaround Time: 2 Working Days

What this test for?
Platelets are tiny fragments of cells that are essential for normal blood clotting. A platelet count may be used to screen for or diagnose various diseases and conditions that can cause problems with clot formation.

Specimen & Container: Whole blood EDTA tube , 3 mL

Transportation Requirement: 2-8 Celcius within 1 hour

What this test for?
A white blood cell (WBC) count measures the number of white blood cells blood, and a WBC differential determines the percentage of each type of white blood cell present in blood. A differential can also detect immature white blood cells and abnormalities, both of which are signs of potential issues. The test will be request if one of several condition occur, i.e. anemia, infection and leukaemia.
