Mycobacteriology

The scope of mycobacteriology testing includes microscopic examination for acid-fast bacilli (Acid-fast smear), culture for Mycobacterium species (AFB Culture) and susceptibility testing for M. tuberculosis complex.

What this test for?
A test is used to look for the mycobacterial that cause tuberculosis and similar infections.

Specimen & Container: (1) Sputum / tracheal aspirates in a sterile, non-leaking collection container. (2) Biopsy / CSF / Pus / tissue / body fluid / aspirates collected aseptically into sterile, non-leaking collection container. (3) Swab with amies transport medium.

Transportation Requirement: Room temperature and specimen should be delivered to the laboratory promptly after collection.

Test Schedule: Daily

Method: Culture (Sensitivity is provided if pathogenic bacteria are isolated).

Turnaround Time: 2 Months
